Accessibility and Usability

THE GOAL
To adapt the web sites and make them more accessible to all of our target users. A sense of commitment and social responsibility.

accesibilidad y usabilidadGENERAL DESCRIPTION
Web Accessibility is understood to be the ability to access the contents and information found on the web sites, bearing in mind the respective limitations of users due to defects, handicaps or the technologies used.

Accessibility improves access to the contents of our Web page in general and so it is not only of interest for handicapped individuals.

In order to make the contents of a Web page accessible, the so-called “Guidelines for Accessibility to the Contents of the Web” (WCAG) have been developed, through the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

The verification of accessibility is assigned  three levels of priority:

  • PrioriTY 1: They are those points which a Web programmer has to comply with, for if not, certain groups of users could not access the information on the web site.
  • PrioriTY 2: They are those points which a Web programmer should comply with, for if this were not the case, it would be very difficult to access the information for certain groups of users.
  • PrioriTY 3: They are those points which a Web programmer should comply with, for if not, some users would experience certain difficulties for accessing the information.

In regard to these points of verification, the levels of conformity are established as follows:

  • LEVEL OF CONFORMITY "A": All the points of verification of Priority 1 are satisfied.
  • LEVEL OF CONFORMITY "Double A": All the points of verification of Priorities 1 and 2 are satisfied.
  • LEVEL OF CONFORMITY "Triple A": All the points of verification of Priorities 1, 2 and 3 are satisfied.

Usability:

The quality of a web site as perceived by the users could be measured mainly by its usability. An effective and efficient use of a Web page contributes radically to the image perceived of the contents and the services offered. Usability is based mainly on avoiding:

  • Disorientation
  • Excessive information and a multitude of actions
  • Identification of interactive elements
  • Waiting Times
  • Distraction
  • A lack of clear and available elements for assistance

The guidelines for designing a web site for easy surfing can be classified in three major groups:

  • Contents and Surfing.
  • Support and Assistance.
  • Style and Design.

JUSTIFICATIONS
In many countries, including all those of the European Union, it has become necessary to comply with the Web Accessibility Guidelines as of 2005 for the pages corresponding to the Administration.

The individuals involved in the Health sector comply in an inherent manner through their respective activities, with their social commitment to the users, patients and public in general. Accessibility relies on universal access to the contents and information, regardless of any deficiencies or handicaps of the persons using the Web.

"Speaking of Web Accessibility means speaking of universal access to the Web, regardless of the type of hardware, software, network infrastructure, language, culture, geographic localization and capacities of the users."
